President Buhari reviews 8 things he's doing concerning the killings in the country
President Buhari in the letter which was made available on Facebook by Femi Adesina, the special adviser on media and publicity to President Buhari, went on to list the actions he is taking concerning the killings.
In this piece, we highlights seven actions President Buhari is taking to address the crisis, as contained in the letter.
1. On the spot assessment
President Buhari said that he has sent the minister of interior and the deputy inspector general of police to assess the situation so that he will be well informed on how best to tackle the crisis.
2. Receive briefing on the situation
President Buhari said he later met with the minister of interior to receive the information gathered from the on the spot assessment and steps taken so far and got a firsthand information about the situation of things in Benue
3. Meet with Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue state
After being briefed by the interior minister, the president said he had a long session with Governor Ortom of Benue state on Tuesday, January 9 during which he informed the governor of police arrest of some suspects with Kalashnikovs.
4. Trial and prosecution of suspects
The president also stated that he has instructed the police IG to speed up trial and prosecution of the suspects and give wide publicity to the police efforts.
5. Open discussions with stakeholders from Benue state
The president said he has also held open discussions with a with a wide cross-section of Benue stakeholders at the Presidential Villa on Thursday, January 15. The president said everybody in the meeting appreciated the complexity and difficulties of the farmer/herder strife.
6. Relocation of the inspector general of police to Benue state
The president said he has also instructed the police IG to relocate to Benue with instructions that the police must work strenuously to apprehend the rest of the culprits of the heartless killings.
7. Redeployment of forces to sensitive areas
President Buhari also said he has instructed the police IG to redeploy forces to the most sensitive areas of the state.
8. Review of national security structure
In order to provide lasting solutions to the security crisis in the country, President Buhari said his administration is also initiating additional security measures.
He said he is also looking into the resolutions sent by the Senate and has instructed all relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to factor them in their work. The president said he is also reviewing the operational, technical and administrative structure of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA).
